What if something happened to you, Jannis?

This is a question I get asked pretty frequently now. What if something happened to me? What would happen to your Ghost site on Magic Pages?
The short answer: probably nothing. Chances are, you wouldn't notice for quite some time.
Magic Pages isn't the only Ghost CMS hosting provider that is operated by a single person (me, Jannis – hi 👋). It's the only one that's pretty transparent about it though. In my eyes, there aren't any benefits of being am ominous "we" – even though you're just a solopreneur.
From a legal perspective, Magic Pages is a sole proprietorship registered in Austria. Legally speaking, if something were to happen to me, the "right to continue business" (yes, we all love a good legal speak, right?) would pass into my inheritance. Meaning: it's probably my wife that's taking things over.
I might be biased, but she is one of the smartest and most capable people I know. She is running her own business in the brand strategy space and has listened to my ramblings about Magic Pages on many, many occasions. Not only does she know what's going on, she also shares the same values and philosophy as me when it comes to conducting business.
Is she a developer like me? No. But everything about Magic Pages is documented internally. Website not running? There is a document that details what needs to happen. Database server crashed? Another document that explains how to restart it. So, for any short-term emergencies, she'll know where to find the information on how to deal with it.
Additionally, Magic Pages has a sort-of "emergency fund". It's a good stack of cash that will keep the lights on for at least six months. Payments to all recurring services (like servers or domains) are made automatically. Worst case, the business credit card can expire. But our bank is 5 minutes walking from our home and the Magic Pages bank account would legally also be accessible to my wife, in a worst-case scenario.
So, as I said on top: chances are, you probably wouldn't even know if something were to happen. If you're hosting your site on Magic Pages for a while now, chances are, you probably didn't even notice when I went on vacation in April and July 2024 😉
The Road Ahead
One missing piece of the puzzle right now is the ability for you to simply pack things up and move your Ghost site somewhere else. For that, you need human assistance (me again), at the moment, due to the way Ghost backups work.
However, your site is already backed up on a daily basis. Both your uploaded content as well as your database are backed up to two different locations.
In the next few weeks (I am writing this on 4 August 2024), I want to implement a functionality in the customer portal that lets you automatically export these backups.
With these backup archives, you can then approach any other Ghost hosting provider and they should be able to simple import the database backup, as well as the content folder, and get your site back up and running within a few minutes.
